La sombra de una recesión planea sobre la economía mexicana. La desaceleración de la actividad observada en el último trimestre de 2016 y la incertidumbre asociada a las decisiones de inversión debido a las políticas impulsadas por el nuevo gobierno de Estados Unidos enfilan a una contracción de la actividad, afirmó Moody´s Analytics.

«Existe una alta probabilidad de que la economía reporte una contracción en el primer trimestre y si la incertidumbre se prolonga hacia mediados de año, México entraría en recesión aún considerando que Estados Unidos podría no desacelerarse», expuso Alfredo Coutiño, director para América Latina de Moody´s Analytics.

La economía mexicana creció 2.3 por ciento anual en 2016. En el último trimestre de ese año, el producto interno bruto (PIB) creció 0.7 por ciento, respecto al trimestre inmediato anterior, de acuerdo con datos oficiales.

Únicamente considerando la inercia del crecimiento del año pasado, la economía mexicana se enfila a una contracción en el primer trimestre del año, con respecto al trimestre anterior, explicó Coutiño.

Si a ello se agrega el efecto negativo de la incertidumbre sobre las decisiones de inversión, entonces la economía podría entrar en recesión técnica en el segundo trimestre e incluso avanzar hacia un estancamiento.

Se considera que una economía está en recesión después de acumular dos trimestres consecutivos con tasas negativas.

«La incertidumbre y volatilidad que enfrenta la economía desde finales del año pasado han generado condiciones para un menor crecimiento en el primer trimestre de este año, sobre todo por la posposición de planes de inversión en el país tanto de nacionales como de extranjeros.

Así, resulta difícil que la economía pueda repetir el crecimiento anual de 2.4 por ciento del cuarto trimestre de 2016», añadió.

Aun en el «remoto caso» de que el PIB del primer trimestre de este año tuviera un crecimiento similar al del cuarto de 2016, la economía reportaría una contracción de 0.1 por ciento en el primer trimestre de 2017, con respecto al trimestre inmediato anterior, expuso. Si reporta una tasa menor, entonces la contracción en el primer trimestre podría ir de 0.5 a 1 por ciento, dijo.

«Dado que la incertidumbre proveniente del exterior se alargará hasta al menos mediados del año, cuando se inicien las negociaciones del Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte (entre los gobiernos de Estados Unidos, Canadá y México), la afectación sobre las decisiones de inversión se extenderá y posiblemente agravará en el segundo trimestre. Esto ocasionaría que se presentara un segundo trimestre de contracción del crecimiento, ubicando al país en recesión técnica».

Con todo esto, añadió, el crecimiento de la economía en 2017 podría ser cercano a cero, «delineando un panorama de estancamiento con alta inflación para el país».

El miércoles, el Banco de México redujo, por quinto trimestre consecutivo, su previsión de crecimiento para 2017. Lo ubicó en un rango de entre 1.3 y 2.3 por ciento, dos décimas de punto menos que el registro previo.
