fans of the sequel took to social media over the weekend
in defense of the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

The film, which sees Joaquin Phoenix return to the lead role of The Joker/Arthur
Fleck, debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough
for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from
the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not
present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.

‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive
as people are making it out to be. I love that the film didn’t try to be
a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they
presented. It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any
    other crowd pleasing aspects.’

Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how
it was structured as a meta-exploration of the
first film’s fandom and the musical elements were a lot of fun.’

Amid tepid returns at the box office for Joker: Folie à Deux, a number of
fans of the sequel took to social media over
the weekend in defense of the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture, starring Joaquin Phoenix

One user marveled that Joker 2 is ‘getting universal hate despite being more interesting and creative than anything marvel has done in years is expected.’

A user said that ‘Joker 2 is genuinely such a clever movie which carries the character study format of the first movie into the second in a way which, surprisingly, will floor you by the

Some users said that the bad word-of-mouth the film was suffering
from was impacting the opinions of moviegoers.

‘The Joker 2 hate is so forced like did we watched the same movie????????’ one user said,
while another said the hate for the film is ‘so unjustified.’

One fan predicted that the motion picture with stand the test of time
    with audiences.

‘I may be one of ten people who genuinely liked the Joker 2.
Remember me when society circles back to it in 10 years
and says its a masterpiece,’ said the user. ‘The
world just wasn’t ready for it yet.’

Said one user: ‘I actually thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you don’t like musicals or ‘art house’ style films you probably
won’t like it because it’s not made for you. The dynamic between Harley and
Joker was brilliant and showcased the ‘obsession’ that is key to that duo.’

The movie’s box office collapse was swift and has many in the industry wondering: How did the highly anticipated sequel to an Oscar-winning, billion-dollar film with the same creative
team go wrong? Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged the movie for a $70 million debut, which would still have been down a fair amount from Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch
    in October 2019.

A number of fans took to social media to defend the controversial sequel

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical
element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise

Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival, where it premiered
in competition like the first movie and even got a 12-minute standing ovation.

But the homecoming glow was short-lived, and
the fragile foundation would crumble in the coming
weeks with its Rotten Tomatoes score dropping from 63 percent at
Venice to 33 percent by its first weekend in theaters. Perhaps even more surprising were the audience reviews: Ticket buyers polled on opening night gave the film
a deadly D CinemaScore. Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t any better.
It got a meager half star out of five possible.

‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.

‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget.
A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would be
    a solid debut.’

Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first
film to produce, though reported figures vary at exactly
how pricey it was to make. Phillips told Variety that
it was less than the reported $200 million; Others have it pegged at $190
million. Warner Bros. released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.

Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing its
total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next two weeks, Joker 2
will also open in Japan and China.

Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s
The Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally,
it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice  took
third place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil
    rounded out the top five.

The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White Bird, flopped
with just $1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.

Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s start is an unwelcome twist for theater
owners hoping to narrow the box office deficit.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that
it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie

Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to make something as ‘audacious’ as the first film.
The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold , as a Joker superfan, and delved further into the
mind of Arthur Fleck, imprisoned at Arkham and awaiting trial for the murders
he committed in the first. It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and dance numbers
to old standards. Gaga even released a companion album called
    »Harlequin,’ alongside the film.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some
who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie.
In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But fans often ignore the advice of critics, especially when it comes to opening their wallets to
see revered comic book characters on the big screen.

‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.
‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know what they´re getting when they´re going to the theater.

They want the tried and true, the familiar.’

Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started with the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical.
‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical
    sequel,’ he wrote on Saturday.

The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse, then about whether it might send the wrong message
to the wrong type of person. And yet people still flocked to see what the fuss was about.
Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best
picture and best director, and three wins. It also made over
$1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine took
    the crown.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.

and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

The day often involves a mix of eating, lounging, socializing,

Plus, with all the eating, your look needs to be forgiving at the waist but formal enough for

    SPIRITED COLORS

Warm, earthy tones that mimic fall foliage are the best colors to wear on Turkey Day.

While black may seem like a logical choice for eating a large meal, festive tones like burnt orange, mustard yellow, forest green, browns and
burgundy are a beautiful alternative for the season.

Burnt orange: Evokes feelings of comfort and warmth, and is associated
    with foliage, fireplaces, and pumpkins.

Mustard yellow: Captures the essence of the season by resembling the color of changing leaves.

Forest green: Associated with nature, it aligns with the theme of
    the holiday.

Browns: Perceived as warm and inviting, brown shades like chocolate, caramel and camel,
are perfect for a family gathering.

Burgundy:  This year’s hottest color, burgundy lends an air of sophistication.

Cream: Natural yet elegant, the neutral creates balance.

Gold: Adds a luxurious touch to any look.

Layering these color with textured fabrics, like
knits or suede and a touch of silk, can create a stylish,
    seasonally appropriate look.

Shades that represent fallen leaves lend a rich, cozy feel
    and festive tone

(instead of at the waistline) and extends to a flowing
    skirt.

Drawstring: Allows for easy adjustments throughout the day offering a
more relaxed fit than a traditional button and zipper closure.

A-line: Flaring out at the hips, the «A» shape provides movement without the discomfort of a waistband.

Wrap style: Most are made from soft, stretchy fabric, allowing the wearer to tighten or loosen the garment as needed.

months before they went Instagram Official.

The veteran presenter, 29, and the Peking Duk frontman went public with their
    relationship in June.

However another racy photo, taken before they became a couple, captured Abbie and Adam waiting patiently together in a fast food line,
with the presenter looking absolutely smitten over the strapping
    musician.

Abbie had a huge smile on her face in the
adorable picture, as she gazed intensely at Adam as they chatted while waiting to
    order.

She captioned the picture: ‘One year and two days since this iconic photo of me being in love with
    Adam.

‘Before we ever even slept together LMAO. «Nah, I don’t have a crush on him anymore».’

Abbie Chatfield has shared a very telling throwback image of her and her boyfriend Adam Hyde,
six months before they went Instagram Official.

    Both pictured

The podcast host was braless in the image,
and her low-slung skirt showed plenty of skin.

Shortly after they went public with their relationship,
Abbie opened up about her sex life with her boyfriend in a candid and wide-ranging chat on her It’s A Lot podcast.

She appeared on the bonus Ask Me Anything episode with Adam, in which they discussed their budding
    romance.

As the new couple fielded questions about their bond, musician Adam cheekily boasted about the couple’s sizzling chemistry.

  24. Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart
of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?

In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments
against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set
    to come together to support.

The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate,
caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent
the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually
less than the major parties currently spend.

The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus
increasing the transparency of who makes political
    donations in the first place.

So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence
election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.

The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need
    to be made.

At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but
you only find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later,
well after elections are won and lost.

In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning by
    the wealthy.

Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the
policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’

Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired
a warning shot – saying if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a rort, not
reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said:
‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having
done so. And how much they can donate will be capped.

Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort,
    not a reform’.

They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might
secure the support of the opposition.

I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before
even starting to write this column.

Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out the
influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or
the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to
    accountability.

    More fool me.

The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by
Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

It makes you wonder what they have to hide.
Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.

Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer

Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court

The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)

The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes
    amongst the Teals.

And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy
in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.

Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile from reforms that will
curtail dark art of political donations.

The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules
to take effect immediately, by the way. It
won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench
    out.

They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough
time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.

Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.

As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond
Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable
of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging
the Coalition electorally in the years to come.

But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws
implemented, the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.

They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.

To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

nominee are also parents of four-year-old son River Mara Phoenix named after Joaquin’s big brother who died, age 23, from
an overdose of morphine and cocaine on Halloween 1993.

‘I love it. I love it so much. I think it’s the best thing in the world,’ Rooney gushed of motherhood on the

  26. Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the
Fair Isle knit. Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out from
the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper (especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s
Diary) or for a winter sport holiday (specifically for après-ski), the Fair Isle jumper
has now become somewhat of a fashion statement.

The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island
in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique to create those distinctive patterns with multiple colours.

It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in the 1920s,
and has remained a casual wardrobe staple for members of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton, whose jumper collection includes
at least three different Fair Isle designs.

    Kensington Palace

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered a Fair Isle
vest by Molly Goddard over a light blue button-down in a
snap for Instagram. The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest from
    Cotswolds-based knitwear brand Cooking Apple,
and sported a chunky Fair Isle crewneck with white, straight-leg jeans, black loafers and an oversized, black leather blazer to ring in the

  27. Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every
first time author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online,
in newspapers and on TV and radio.

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over
what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia
his book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime
Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese
got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.

He said Aston was using the accusations to sell
books and said he was hiding his employment history.

    ‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations
he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said.

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate
    communications senior adviser.

Joe Aston (pictured) got the kind of book launch every first time
author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online,
in newspapers and on TV and radio

Anthony Albanese (right) is pictured with his fiance Jodie Haydon (left) and
then Qantas CEO Alan Joyce on March 31, 2023 in Sydney, Australia

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP
Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison.

‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just
    before his book launch.

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the
book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister
    made.

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public figures and leaders
who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he said.

Extravagant Qantas perk Anthony Albanese FAILED to declare is revealed…
    after two days of denials

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who is a
former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders
if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.

‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s blaming other
MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you were the
Transport Minister? The answer is «yes» and he’s desperately trying to
    avoid saying it.’

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.

Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people
are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest
blow to his credibility has led to calls
    for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get
this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is pictured with the then Qantas CEO Alan Joyce

Anthony Albanese is pictured on August 14, 2023 as Qantas unveiled its Yes23 livery in support of a Yes vote in the
    Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum

Among the movers and shakers at Joe Aston’s book launch
in the ritzy Hemmesphere club in Sydney was Tabcorp director David Gallop (pictured)

Paul Barry (pictured in blue shirt), the host of the ABC’s Media Watch show, was also at the launch

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say …
anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony
Albanese. This book is about Qantas.

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences
politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you name it.

They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.
I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about and it never was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia and eventually winds
    up back on Mr Albanese.

‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

Guests at Joe Aston’s book launch on Tuesday night are pictured pointing for emphasis or to someone they recognise

There was no shortage of free alcohol (pictured) available at the
    launch of Joe Aston’s book

Joe Aston is pictured in the exclusive Hemmesphere
club in Sydney, where his book The Chairman’s Lounge was launched

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics
a long time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him,
    is what I’ve seen.

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis.

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the International Grand
Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get
what it looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the
claims in the book are) just another example of
    that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s
travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline
and asks if their flight can be upgraded.

The difference with the Prime Minister is
that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where
it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll
    get upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted and you are guaranteed.

You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going
    «Geez, I hope there is a spare seat».

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO.
No other executive can do that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades
    (for Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during
his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up
    there.

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too. Once you’ve experienced the front of
the plane, it’s very hard to go back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got
chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around
in the front of the plane on personal travel.

‘A normal person would say «Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Qantas for comment.

  28. Joker: Folie À Deux director Todd Phillips ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during making of the $200million flop film, a new report has claimed.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film – stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga and was considered a surefire hit for Warner
Bros Pictures – but was slammed by critics and failed to ignite at
    the box office.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with
Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the
making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter
Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about
some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that
    guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does
not include a DC Studios logo.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds
an audience score of 31% and a critic score of 32%

which had lost a day of production due to Hurricane Helene, while Safran was

Joker: Folie À Deux is branded ‘bleak’ and the ‘most disappointing follow-up’ by critics

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker
sequel. while Phillips declined to comment
    to the publication.

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to
say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy
rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening
for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told
a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a
    Warner Bros. movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with
Phillips  shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the
director would make the sequel at a lower price
    point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with Phillips’ process telling Variety
he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making
of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty
    last month

A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los
    Angeles’.

A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could
get through to Todd. And the one thing about genre
stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at
the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a
Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic
book movie history as the film bombed at the box office on opening
    night.

It has only made $114million worldwide against its
    $200million budget.

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as
‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday,
October 4, but it only raked in $20 million at the domestic box office, per
    The Hollywood Reporter.

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which
had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the
role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn).

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score
    for a comic book movie.

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher
    score with a C+.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a critic score of 32%.

The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at the domestic box office during the entirety of opening weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but
the number has since drastically dropped.

Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters – and eventually landed a little over $1 billion in the global
    box office.

The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips – had a budget of between $55 and
$70 million. However, the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200 million.

The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from
both critics and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the 76th Venice International Film Festival.

Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score.

The sequel also screened during the Venice International
Film Festival last month in September, where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per
    Deadline.

A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.
And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to
what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.

However, audiences have since taken to X after the movie released in theaters on Friday – and shared their opinions
on the sequel, which features musical sequences.

One fan penned, ‘Joaquin Phoenix don’t deserve this.
what happened to the script?’ while another added, ‘is it that bad,’ followed by
    a crying face emoji.

‘Ironically I feel that a musical, if done well, could have been a good choice.
It’d show how much of an unreliable narrator Fleck is,’ one typed.

‘But with some original songs, that keep everything vague, not just covers.
Also when I heard of the ending I snorted fr.’

A social media user wrote, ‘Stop making sequels as musicals if the original
    wasn’t a musical.’

‘Maybe he [Phillips] only had an hour long movie, and decided to randomly add musical scenes to fill
    the runtime,’ one penned.

‘Joker downfall really needs to be studied,’ another shared, along with
a monkey staring out a window.

One fan said, ‘the movie sucks. i had to walk out of the cinema,’ while another penned, ‘After years of disagreement….*Joker 2 releases* Critics [shaking hands] Audience.’

However, audiences have since taken to X after the movie released in theaters on Friday – and shared their opinions over the sequel, which was also a musical

‘Ironically I feel that a musical, if done well, could have been a good choice.
It’d show how much of an unreliable narrator Fleck is,’ one typed

‘Joker downfall really needs to be studied,’ another shared, along
with a monkey staring out a window

‘That’s way below what we expected,’ one wrote in regards to the current Rotten Tomatoes scores.
‘People are saying this is the worst sequel ever.’

A fan explained, ‘yea this film was bad. it was
pretentious and dull. has the aesthetic of an arthouse
    film without the substance.’

‘It also insults the audience’s intelligence. the songs were
also underwhelming too. they shouldn’t have let this escape to theaters.’

One shared, ‘The audience that loved the first movie is
not the same audience running to see musicals. This was a gigantic mistake from step 1.’

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Phillips discussed whether he would be interested in making a third Joker film or a movie centered around Gaga’s
    character.

‘It’s not really where this movie is headed for me. I feel like my time in the DC Universe was these two films.’

Ahead of the movie’s release, Lady Gaga also dropped an accompanying album titled Harlequin on September 27.

Joker: Folie À Deux has been branded the ‘most disappointing follow-up
to the Oscar-winning movie’ by critics, as they cast doubt on Lady Gaga’s ‘thin’ role in the film following its release on Friday.

‘That’s way below what we expected,’ one wrote in regards to the current Rotten Tomatoes scores.
‘People are saying this is the worst sequel ever’

A fan explained, ‘yea this film was bad. it
was pretentious and dull. has the aesthetic of an arthouse film without the substance’

The ‘bleak’ sequel, has also received a tepid reception from fans, with some claiming Lady Gaga’s career could be at risk.

While the same director Todd Phillips was back in the hot seat, critics have said
the sequel is just a ‘repeat’ of the first hit but with an added
    musical twist.

Most critics have said Todd failed to use Gaga correctly in the
movie and claimed she was only bought in for the musical aspect of
    it.

While the majority of critics say Joker: Folie À Deux didn’t live up to expectations,
others have dubbed the movie ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant.’

Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but said it lacked
    any thrill.

The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is best remembered as one of the most subversive and original
films of the last decade, while its hugely anticipated
sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie
just two stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.

Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to
bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea
    what to do with her.

Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

Joker: Folie À Deux has been branded the ‘most disappointing follow-up to the Oscar-winning movie’ by critics,
as they cast doubt on Lady Gaga’s ‘thin’ role in the film following its release on Friday; seen in September in London

The Times’ Kevin Maher wrote: ‘The director Todd Phillips said there would be no
follow-up to the original, but he changed his mind and the result is
    a derivative musical’

‘This might be the most disappointing follow-up to an Oscar-winning performance since Anthony Hopkins reworked
his silky and terrifying Dr Lecter from for the campy, kitschy.’

Along with Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix, other stars that had
appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

Joker: Folie à Deux has faced additional backlash from
fans as they have claimed that Gaga is running
the risk of losing her acting career.

  30. Tobacco companies have been working on new accessories that bypass the
UK’s ban on menthol cigarettes, which comes into force this week, according to a new study.

UK researchers say tobacco companies have used a four-year period to prepare for
the ban by developing new products such as menthol filters and
‘flavour cards’ that make regular cigarettes taste minty.

A loophole in the ban means these accessories can be promoted
to customers near the cash till in shops in England and Wales after the ban, which takes effect on Wednesday, May
    20.

Tobacco companies have created new websites and sponsorships in ways that undermine the intended public health benefit
of the ban, the researchers add.

The companies realise the menthol ban will trigger smokers to quit and are therefore attempting
to ‘move the smokers onto new tobacco products’, they claim.

Tobacco firms continued to sell and promote menthol products and
to develop new products which circumvent the ban since it was
    announced

‘The way tobacco companies are using the ban on menthol cigarettes
to promote new menthol tobacco products which are heated rather than burned undermines
the very purpose of this ban,’ said Professor Anna Gilmore, Director
of the Tobacco Control Research Group (TCRG) at the
    University of Bath.

‘It also flies in the face of tobacco company claims that they wish to reduce the harm from smoking.

‘They realise the menthol ban will trigger smokers to quit
    – instead they seek to move the smokers onto new tobacco products which
independent evidence indicates are as dangerous as smoking and from which they make even more
    profit.’

A menthol cigarette ban for the UK was first agreed in 2014 and
was originally due to come into force in 2016 – however,
intense lobbying put it back four years until this week.

The prohibition, in effect in just two days’ time, will also see flavoured rolling tobacco and ‘skinny’ cigarettes outlawed.

Tobacco product manufacturer The Republic Group also introduced a
new menthol filter via its Swan brand

The ban comes from the EU’s new Tobacco Product Directive laws, which
    prohibit all menthol cigarettes.

The rules will still apply to Britain during the Brexit transition period, as the instruction was implemented in UK law in 2016.

For the new study, TCRG researchers analysed industry analyst data to track menthol
market cigarette share from the original legislation agreement in 2016 through to
    2018.

They also analysed documentary evidence – industry documents, websites and
retail publications – to understand tobacco industry activities.

UK market share of menthol cigarettes grew from 14 per cent of cigarette sales in 2014 to 21
per cent in 2018, they found.

In the four-year phasing in period, tobacco firms have not only continued to sell and promote menthol products, but worked on new ways to push smokers towards menthol products that circumvent the ban,
    TCRG claims.

These include menthol filters and flavour cards that smokers can add to cigarette packs, as well as ‘roll-your-own’ tobacco pouches, to make them
    minty.

A menthol flavour can be added to cigarettes during the manufacturing process or
smokers can add it themselves by crushing a menthol capsule.

In particular, Imperial Brands launched menthol and capsule roll-your-own filter tips
in mid-2017 and January 2019, respectively.

Independent roll-your-own and make-your-own accessories specialist, The Republic
Group, based in the US, also introduced a new menthol filter through its Swan brand.

A recent innovation for adding mint flavour is the addition of a capsule,
or ‘crushball’ – a small plastic capsule in the filter activated by crushing.

Image shows a menthol capsule located inside a filter. A menthol
flavour can be added to cigarettes during the manufacturing process
or smokers can add it themselves by crushing a menthol capsule

These crushballs first appeared on the market in Japan in 2007 and are popular among young people ‘due to the flavour
and interactivity’, the researchers say in their
    study in BMJ’s Tobacco Control.

But big tobacco companies have also created dedicated websites for retailers and smokers that effectively undermine the
intended public health benefit of Wednesday’s
    ban.

These website push consumers to switch to other products instead of quitting and promote new heated products such as IQOS, which heats menthol-flavoured tobacco rather than burning it.

Two tobacco companies have also introduced cigarette-like ‘cigarillos’ – small, narrow cigars – with a flavour capsule.

Although cigarillos currently have a small market share of UK
tobacco sales, this share will grow partly because they are subject to lower taxes than cigarettes and are mostly
    exempt from plain packaging legislation.

‘Our findings suggest the tobacco industry was driving sales of menthol cigarettes right up to the ban –
a product whose serious health implications had led to the ban in the first place,’ said lead author Dr Rosemary
    Hiscock, also at TCRG.

‘We recommend loopholes in legislation be closed as soon as possible to prevent
tobacco companies undermining the intended public
    health impacts of the legislation.

‘This includes preventing the display of tobacco accessories and extending the menthol band to all tobacco products, including cigarillos
    and heated tobacco products.’

One in six menthol smokers said they will quit after the menthol ban, which could reduce overall UK
cigarette sales by 3 per cent, TCRG said.

The ban will be help reduce deaths and illness caused by cigarette smoking, such as strokes, cancer and lung
    disease.

But the addition of menthol to cigarettes takes
away some of the harsh sensations of smoking and can make them more appealing to young people.

Menthol can also mask early respiratory disease symptoms, meaning menthol smokers could carry on smoking after they start to become ill.

‘Research shows that menthol in cigarettes makes
it easier for children to try smoking and to go on to become addicted
smokers,’ said public health charity Action on Smoking and Health’s chief executive, Deborah Arnott.

‘Getting rid of menthol cigarettes will reduce the likelihood of young people taking
up smoking, and make it easier for smokers to quit.

‘It’s disgraceful that Imperial Tobacco is trying to undermine the ban by selling cards which infuse
    menthol into cigarettes.’

The tobacco industry’s exploitation of the menthol ban mirrors
the introduction of plain and standardised packaging in 2016, TCRG said.

Tobacco companies misused the phase-in period to find was to circumvent legalisation and shore up profits at
the expense of public health, they claim.

    Relationship between compounds and minerals?

    Asked by Wiki User

No – most minerals are inorganic.

  33. July 23 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International pushed the test-launch of its
heated tobacco device, IQOS, in the U.S. to the fourth quarter
on Tuesday and lowered its annual forecast
    for the heated tobacco business.

The pilot was earlier scheduled to run in Austin, Texas, in the
second quarter, for which the company reported results on the day.

The company declined to comment on why the launch had been delayed.

Philip Morris has invested billions to promote and expand its portfolio of alternatives to traditional combustible
cigarettes amid stricter regulations and falling smoking rates in some markets.

The launch of its flagship heated tobacco device in the United States is also facing resistance from health campaigners, who have written to regulators in the country accusing the company of misrepresenting past
regulatory decisions, Reuters reported last week.

The company also awaits market authorization from the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration for its IQOS ILUMA device, which it expects by the second half of
    2025.

A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has already hit shipments this year, with Philip
Morris saying the impact from the ban was «slightly greater» than previously assumed.

This led the company to temper its expectations for volume growth in the heated
tobacco category to around 13% for the full year, down from between 14% and 16% expected earlier.

However, Philip Morris topped quarterly expectations
and raised its annual sales and profit forecasts, betting on demand for its Zyn nicotine pouches, as well as
higher cigarette pricing. (Reporting by Juveria Tabassum and

  34. Red takes center stage as the hottest color of the holiday season.

All red looks have been trending with the fashion set for some time, but after Rihanna attended the Fenty Hair launch party in a monochromatic look accessorized with
multiple ruby baubles, red-on-red became cooler than ever.

The ‘Stay’ hitmaker donned a custom red leather Khaite jacket and skirt with
ruby and diamond jewelry by Sabyasachi,
    David Webb and Reza.

Monochromatic outfits, particularly in red, exude confidence and sophistication.

With the vibrant color being synonymous with the holiday season, it’s a natural choice for
    parties and festive gatherings.

By also accessorizing with ruby jewelry (à la Rihanna) you can add
a touch of luxury to even the simplest of separates.

Unlike your grandmother’s precious jewels, today’s ruby designs are being reimagined by
edgy jewelers that aren’t taking the gem so seriously.

Rihanna was photographed dripping in rubies at the Fenty Hair launch party and just like that…

Rubies are often referred to as the ‘king of gemstones’ and their vibrant color – caused by the presence of chromium – is often associated with
    passion, love, and power.

The name ‘ruby’ comes from the Latin word ‘ruber’ which means red.

Rubies are incredibly sought after for their beauty and durability, they are ranked 9 on the Mohs
scale of hardness (qualitative scale that measures the relative hardness of
minerals and other materials by their resistance to scratching),
    second to diamonds.

Beyond their sparkle and strength, they have
    held cultural significance for centuries.

Throughout history, rubies have been associated with nobility
and wealth, often adorning the crowns of kings and queens.
They are also believed to bring good fortune and
    protection to their wearer.

According to Melee the Show founders Lauren Wolf and Rebecca Overmann, ruby jewelry is on the
    rise.

The fine jewelry trade show connects buyers and designers, with the next shows taking place in New York (February 1-3) and Tucson (February 5-7).

‘From bold gemstones to intricate craftsmanship, our designers bring rubies to life in ways that inspire
    and captivate,’ said the duo.

Anthony Lent, Fannie Thomas, Heather Guidero, Jake Matluck, Amali,
Karin Jacobson, Marian Maurer and Ciara Bowles are some of the exhibiting designers who work with rubies.

    Dara Kay Jewelry

Dara continues, ‘I loved the concept of celebrating love in a way that was sweet but not overly syrupy.

‘That is why I chose oversized stones to really sparkle and to use my signature

  36. From state banquets to official engagements, the Princess of Wales has an ever-growing and faultless selection of tailored coat dresses, black-tie gowns and court shoes at her disposal, but it’s her everyday
wardrobe that really takes the crown. Scroll down to see 21 Kate Middleton-approved cold-weather staples we’ll be wearing this season.

    A camel coat

No winter wardrobe is complete without a camel coat

No winter wardrobe is complete without a camel coat – and the
Princess of Wales knows this. She tends to go for tailored, ankle-length silhouettes that can easily be layered over midi dresses and a pair of knee-high boots.

Shop the look: Coat, £119, Zara

    Coat, £119, Zara

    A knitted midi dress
She also knows the power of a knitted midi dress. It’s
one of throw-on-and-go heroes that’ll make you look put together,
even if you’ve rushed out of the house in the morning without looking in a mirror.

(Although we doubt that’s the case for Kate.)

Shop the look: Dress, £188, Reiss

    Dress, £188, Reiss

    A sweater vest

Kate proving sweater vests are cool again

We’d love a peek inside the Princess of Wales’ knitwear collection, which includes this sleeveless knit.
Sweater vests are often considered a little
frumpy but layered over a white button-down (à la Kate) they’re a perfect office staple for the chilly weather.

    A Fair Isle jumper

Her knitwear collection includes at least three Fair Isle jumpers

Nothing signals the start of Christmas quite like the return of the Fair Isle knit
(check out our roundup of the cosiest here) – and the Princess’ jumper
collection includes at least three different designs.

Shop the look: Jumper, £179, Holland & Cooper

    Jumper, £179, Holland & Cooper

    A tartan dress

The Princess loves to add a touch of tartan to her outfits in the winter

Another print that’s synonymous with the holiday season is tartan. Kate Middleton’s winter wardrobe includes plaid coats, scarves
and skirts, but our favourite of her tartan pieces is this Emilia Wickstead dress.

    A pair of knee-high boots

The combo of a midi skirt and knee-high boots can’t be beat

Once the temperatures drop, there’s no shoe the Princess of Wales loves more than a heeled,
knee-high boot. She has a pair in nearly every colour – and usually wears them
with midi dresses or skirts and long, woollen coats.

Shop the look: Boots, £165, Dune

Speaking of midi skirts – Kate has amassed quite the collection, which
includes a leopard print, tartan and houndstooth skirt.

    A pair of leather gloves

    No cold hands for Kate

On those frosty days, Kate Middleton doesn’t leave the house without a pair of leather gloves – and we wouldn’t either.
Gloves have become a must-have fashion staple that instantly levels up your
    cold-weather style.

Shop the look: Gloves, £22, Next

    Gloves, £22, Next

    A red scarf

When in doubt, just add a red accessory

Do we think the Princess knows about the ‘pop of red’ trick (i.e.
adding a single red accessory to an otherwise neutral outfit,
to give it a little extra edge)? She’s reworn the same red
    scarf on multiple occasions.

Shop the look: Scarf, £19, John Lewis

    Scarf, £19, John Lewis

    A pair of riding boots

She’s been wearing these boots for two decades

Fuelled by television phenomena such as Rivals, riding boots
have become one of the most unexpected footwear trends of AW24 – and Kate Middleton has been wearing these Penelope
    Chilvers tassel boots since 2004.

Shop the look: Boots, £475, Penelope Chilvers

    Boots, £475, Penelope Chilvers

    A wax jacket
Speaking of hardworking pieces in the Princess’ wardrobe – she owns at least two wax jackets from Barbour, which
she sports to stroll around the countryside in her downtime, or
whenever she’s launching outdoorsy campaigns as a working royal.

Shop the look: Jacket, £185, Mint Velvet

    Jacket, £185, Mint Velvet

    A fedora

Has anyone ever looked more chic in a fedora?

We’d love a peek inside Kate Middleton’s headwear collection, which has grown to be quite substantial, but
by far our favourite hat she’s ever worn is this cobalt blue fedora courtesy of Hicks & Brown.

Shop the look: Fedora, £109, Hicks & Brown

    Fedora, £109, Hicks & Brown

A pair of dark wash jeans

We’d copy and paste this outfit on weekends

It’s not often we see the Princess of Wales in jeans,
and when we do she’s usually sporting a skinnier shape,
so we haven’t been able to stop thinking about these cropped kick-flare jeans since they
had their first outfit last winter.

Shop the look: Jeans, £29.99, Mango

    Jeans, £29.99, Mango

    A pair of Chelsea boots
Another staple from Kate Middleton’s casual wardrobe are these brown Chelsea boots.

    A cashmere roll neck

There’s no better investment than a cashmere roll
    neck

Few knits feel more luxurious than a cashmere jumper – and Kate Middleton agrees.
Her go-to brands for roll necks include Hobbs,
Ralph Lauren and Gabriela Hearst, but there are some great-quality, affordable cashmere brands on the
    high street, too.

Shop the look: Jumper, £95, M&S

    Jumper, £95, M&S

    A faux fur hat

    No cold ears for Kate

We admit it would have to be baltic outside before we’d wear
a faux fur hat, but the Princess does really make a case for them – she makes them look
chic and cosy at the same time.

Shop the look: Hat, £22.99, Zara

    Hat, £22.99, Zara

    A bouclé jacket

The Princess is a fan of glittering bouclé jackets

First created by Coco Chanel back in the 1950s, the bouclé jacket still
reigns supreme among the fashion set. Kate Middleton favours them during the holidays –
and opts for metallic iterations for a festive take on the classic.

Shop the look: Jacket, £45, River Island

    A trouser suit

Who looks better in a suit? (Our vote goes to Kate)

Since becoming the Princess of Wales, Kate has embraced suiting and amassed an impressive collection of smart blazers, tailored trousers and silk blouses
in a rainbow of colours. While she still often goes for tapered silhouettes,
we’re big fans of her wide-leg trouser suits.

You’ll find more than one pussy bow blouse in Kate’s workwear wardrobe

If the words ‘Kate Middleton’ and ‘blouse’ don’t call up images of the royal in a silky pussy
bow top, then you haven’t been paying enough
attention. Paired with tailored trousers, the blouse has become one of her signature workwear styles.
