Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and
reproductive rights

As their race for the US presidency comes down to the
wire, each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald
Trump.

In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak, with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that activists hope.

Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.

Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both appear likely to
pass.

So the abortion issue may not be «helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,» said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.

Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump back to the White House,
Brian said.

Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs. Republican issue, the Republican Party includes «a broad spectrum of views on the topic,» an issue that also
raises conservatives’ concerns about «government interference,» she added.

The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona
ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also «moderates and even many Democrats,» said John Kavanagh,
a Republican and an Arizona state senator.

The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening on migration, specifically her
promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.

The vice president, Kavanagh said, is «running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.»

Jackie O Henderson has left her father Tony red-faced after a shocking stunt in which he was tricked into reading about
her threesome live on-air.

The awkward family exchange occurred on Tuesday’s Kyle and Jackie O Show when the radio queen and co-host
Kyle Sandilands were discussing Jackie’s new memoir The Whole Truth.

Before getting her father on the line, Jackie explained to listeners that
she was about to get an unsuspecting Tony
to read an excerpt that detailed a night of passion with then boyfriend ‘Ugly’ Phil O’Neil and a 19-year-old stripper.

‘So this is going back to my Gold Coast days when I had met Phil who [later became] my first husband,’ the 49-year-old explained.

‘I had only just met him at this point. I think [we were] two months into
seeing each other.’

Jackie then prompted her unprepared father to read the excerpt
that detailed Phil’s living situation with the stripper and another,
rather unsavory ‘stoner’ flatmate.  

‘He lived in a place in Main Beach that felt like a motel with two
weird flatmates. One was a stoner guy who would sit
there blazed out of his gourd,’ Tony read from Jackie’s book.

‘Am I amazed? Probably not,’ he said.

‘I’m sort of trying to take all of this in.
After all, its my daughter we’re talking about. If it was
somebody else, it would be a different story altogether.
I’d be so excited.

‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand how these things happen.’

Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male flatmate and Jackie’s mother Julie. 

‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the door, she put her face to the
screen to see inside and that flatmate was right there in the living room, pants down, w***ing,’ a shocked Tony
read.

The revelations come after Jackie spoke for the first time about her years-long battle with drugs which saw her secretly go to rehab at The Betty Ford Clinic
in November in 2022.

During a tearful on-air admission, Jackie said at
the height of her addiction, she took around 10-12 Stilnox/Ambien sleeping pills
and 24 Panadeine Forte painkillers a day.

May 22 (Reuters) – More than 100 public health and anti-tobacco organizations are calling on Facebook Inc, Instagram, Twitter and Snap Inc to take «swift action» to curb advertising of tobacco products on their platforms.

The organizations’ letter to the firms cited a recent Reuters report website documenting how cigarette maker
Philip Morris International Inc has used young personalities on Instagram to sell a new «heated tobacco»
product called IQOS.

The groups said social media firms are not doing enough
to regulate «influencers» on their platforms who are hired by companies to promote nicotine products.

No law specifically prevents online tobacco or e-cigarette marketing, but social media firms have policies limiting it.
The health groups said in their letter that the use of online personalities creates a «loophole» in those policies
and allows «rampant marketing» of tobacco and other nicotine products to youth.

Instagram and its parent company, Facebook, are studying the issue «to understand how we can improve,» said
spokeswoman Stephanie Otway.

The platforms currently ban brand advertising
of tobacco products, Otway said. Their policies require any sponsored «influencer» posts that explicitly recommended buying tobacco products be restricted only to people over 18.

But the same restriction would not apply to posts by paid influencers that depict tobacco products favorably
without explicitly saying that people should buy them, Otway said.

In making policy for a billion users, the company has to draw lines
between advertising, promotional posts and «someone having an opinion,» Otway said.

Twitter spokeswoman Elizabeth Luke said the company prohibits «the promotion of tobacco products, accessories and brands worldwide»
but declined to comment on whether that includes influencers paid to
feature tobacco products on their accounts.

A Reuters review of Twitter policies shows that its tobacco promotion ban does not include such marketing posts by individuals.

Reuters identified several Twitter posts over the last two years from influencers
who posted photographs with IQOS devices or linked back to Instagram accounts promoting the product.
Twitter did not comment on the posts identified by Reuters.

Snap Inc did not respond to requests for comment.

The more than 100 organizations from 48 countries that signed the letter website which was sent to the companies Friday and publicly
released Wednesday, included the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the Japan Society
for Tobacco Control and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Reuters earlier this month documented how Philip Morris had used
young social media influencers, including a 21-year-old woman in Russia, to promote its IQOS device.
The company’s internal marketing standards prohibit it from using youth-oriented
celebrities or «models who are or appear to be under the age of 25.»

Philip Morris said May 10 that it launched an internal
investigation and suspended all «product-related digital influencer actions globally» after Reuters
sought the company’s comment on examples of Instagram posts and photographs depicting young, hip women advertising IQOS.

PHILIP MORRIS SUSPENDS MARKETING, THEN DEFENDS IT

All of the posts referenced in the Reuters report remained online as of Tuesday evening.
In addition, Reuters has identified new examples of Instagram content featuring young people with the IQOS
posted in the days since Philip Morris said it had suspended its influencer
campaigns.

Several posts under the Instagram account @iqos_egypt over the past week have featured young men and women website using the device at bars or cocktail events website Other posts from accounts using the
IQOS name in Poland, Armenia, Italy and Iran over the last week also showed young website trendy website men website and
women website using the devices.

Other posts emerged over the last week from a photographer who documented an IQOS-sponsored VIP lounge
at an April music festival in Colombia.

A representative for an IQOS store in Sarno, Italy, said employees found the recent
photos of women using IQOS elsewhere online and reposted them on the
store’s Instagram account. A representative of an IQOS-branded Instagram account in Armenia denied being paid by
Philip Morris to promote the product.

Other Instagram account owners promoting IQOS did not respond to requests
for comment. None of the influencers mentioned in the May 10 Reuters report responded to
requests for comment on whether they had been asked to
stop posting or remove posts marketing Philip Morris products.

Philip Morris spokesman Ryan Sparrow said the firm had «directed that there should be no new posts»
by influencers. Sparrow did not respond to questions about whether the company had stopped paying influencers or attempted to remove existing posts.

Sparrow said some of the new posts «seem to originate from third parties, not PMI, and in countries where we do not sell IQOS,» noting Eqypt and
Iran.

Sparrow defended the suspended marketing campaign as a vital way to inform
adult cigarette smokers about safer options. He blasted the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids for «trying to pressure us … to effectively block these channels» and «in effect perpetuating the consumption of tobacco in its most harmful form: combustible cigarettes.»

Caroline Renzulli, a spokeswoman for the anti-tobacco campaign, called it «laughable» that Philip Morris used social media to market
to adults.

Philip Morris International has licensed Altria Group Inc
to market the IQOS device in the United States beginning this
summer.

Altria, which sells Marlboro cigarettes in the
United States, has previously said it has a policy of not advertising on social media.
However, an online job posting from the company in March seeks
a «digital marketing specialist» for the «IQOS brand team.» The ideal candidate will develop marketing strategy for «e-commerce, owned websites, social media and influencers.»

Altria spokesman David Sutton said the company has no plans to
use social media influencers to market IQOS but did not respond to questions about the job posting mentioning
an influencer strategy.

REGULATORY GRAY AREA

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last month decided to allow U.S.
sales of the IQOS device after a two-year review process in which
Philip Morris repeatedly assured the regulator that it would warn young
people away from the product.

Digital advertising of tobacco products remains a gray
area for regulators globally. Tobacco advertising regulations in the United States and elsewhere were written before
the rise of social media marketing.

The FDA, however, can exert authority over the digital marketing of new
devices it clears for sale. As a condition of allowing
Philip Morris to sell the IQOS device, the agency requires the company to provide
detailed analyses of the age ranges of consumers it reaches with online marketing.

Philip Morris, through Altria, is also required to submit information on any
new U.S. advertising campaigns to the FDA at least 30 days before it plans to launch them.

A global treaty governing tobacco regulations, under the umbrella of
the World Health Organization, urges countries worldwide to entirely
ban tobacco advertising. A 2018 WHO report about tobacco promotion in entertainment and social media channels acknowledged the
challenges of regulating it.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) – Maryland’s Democratic Senate candidate
improperly claimed property tax credits for two homes, something her campaign says she was unaware of and
plans to repay.

Angela Alsobrooks, who is the county executive of Prince George’s County, claimed homestead and senior property tax credits for a
home in Washington, D.C., and homestead credits on another one in Prince George’s
County, according to a story first reported by CNN. Her campaign confirmed the credits
on Monday.

Alsobrooks owns two homes in Prince George’s.
She received a homestead exemption for the first home in May 2008.
A homestead tax break credit is for homes that are an owner’s primary residence.
When Alsobrooks moved into a new home and started renting
the Upper Marlboro townhouse, she did not transfer the
homestead tax credit to her new home.

«This resulted in no financial gain for Angela,» said Connor Lounsbury, a
senior advisor to her campaign. «In fact, she ended up paying more in taxes than she would have had the credit transferred over. Nevertheless, Angela is working to repay any credits received on the old property.»

Alsobrooks also owned a home in Washington after she took over the mortgage when her grandmother moved out in 2005.

«Many Marylanders know how difficult and complex it is when a family member needs to leave their home,» Lounsbury said.
«When this situation happened to Angela´s grandmother, Angela stepped up and took it over for her family and paid the mortgage until the property was sold in 2018. She was unaware of any tax credits attached to that property and has reached out to the District of Columbia to resolve the issue and make any necessary payment.»

Alsobrooks is running in an unusually competitive Maryland Senate race against Republican former Gov.
Larry Hogan. The race could determine control of the Senate.

Hogan’s campaign criticized Alsobrooks over the tax credits.

«She claims to be unaware of tax laws it was her job to enforce,» said Hogan campaign spokesperson Blake Kernen. «Governor Hogan has always stood up for taxpayers and in the Senate, he will continue to fight for fairness and fiscal responsibility.»

Gaga’s take, which also features on her new album Harlequin, is a much more  stripped back that
builds to a crescendo thanks to rocking guitars.

Speaking to Today Extra about the track, Kath & Kim star Peter Rowsthorn joked
that he was ‘constantly’ hounded by the US pop star regarding the track.

‘She’s constantly calling me, so I know she’s a big fan,’ Pete,
who play’s Kim’s on-again-off-again husband Brett in the series,
said.

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better
representing the views of everyday Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States. 

The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan  complaining that Americans were ‘completely
trapped in the two-party system’.

‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very
interesting thing that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe
countered.

‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to
bring a non-party-line series of points to the argument.

‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making both of
the main parties re-examine who they are and what they stand for.

Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how
US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.

There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.

Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but
gained no electoral college votes.

Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying six states including California and coming second ahead of
Republican William Taft.

Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who have taken votes
away from the two traditional parties of Labor and the Liberal-National
coalition

This situation is helped by a strong Green party
who now have 12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms
but are fiscally conservative have been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.

This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views on climate
with the traditional ‘blue’ approach of the centre-right
Liberal Party on economics.

Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the
2019 election.

In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election. 

She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 16, with this tally including the
four Greens, three conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.

Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired
in August, has recently resurfaced in teal social media adverts.

They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court, who
founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding to some teal candidates.

Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were
teals, however.

Dai Lee, a former state Liberal candidate, defeated
former Labor frontbencher and former NSW Labor premier Kristina Keneally in the south-west Sydney seat of

And, of course, maverick Bob Katter who has just celebrated 50 years
in parliament, spending 20 years as a Queensland state MP before serving the past three decades
in federal parliament as the MP for the regional far north
Queensland electorate of Kennedy. 

Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid to teach
school kids how to fire rifles and a desire to build
a missile shield across northern Australia.

The House of Representatives crossbench grew
to 17 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest at its opposition to the Indigenous
Voice to Parliament. 

The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house – the highest proportion of non major party MPs since Federation in 1901.
