La Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente (PROFEPA) activó la Red de Atención para Varamientos de Mamíferos Marinos en Baja California, a fin de atender el varamiento de un ejemplar muerto de Ballena de Aleta (Balaenoptera physalus), en la ciudad de Playas de Rosarito, Baja California.

En atención a un reporte ciudadano, a través de la línea de Emergencias 911, mediante el cual se informó a PROFEPA sobre la presencia de un ejemplar de “Ballenato” varado en una Playa del municipio de Playas de Rosarito, Baja California, personal especializado con apoyo de la Asociación Civil “Investigación y Conservación de Mamíferos Marinos de Ensenada, B.C. (ICCME)” y del Departamento de Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre del Municipio de Playas de Rosarito, se abocó a realizar recorridos a lo largo del litoral de la playa mencionada en el reporte.

Los restos del ejemplar se ubicaron en la Playa conocida como “Las Olas”, consistiendo en un macho adulto de Ballena de Aleta o también conocidos como Rorcual Común (Balaenoptera physalus), de 25 metros de largo, de aproximadamente 24 toneladas de peso, mostrando indicios de descomposición, ya que presentaba hinchazón, lengua y ojos expuestos y desprendimiento de piel.

Durante la revisión exhaustiva del organismo, no se encontraron indicios o evidencias de marcas, laceraciones o heridas provocados por artes de pesca (redes) que pudieran determinar que su muerte fuese originada por causas antropogénicas.

Concluido lo anterior, con apoyo del Departamento de Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre del VII Ayuntamiento de Playas de Rosarito, en apego a lo establecido en el Protocolo de Atención para Varamientos de Mamíferos Marinos, se procedió a dar disposición final del organismo, mediante sepultura in situ. Lo anterior, para evitar posibles afectaciones a la salud humana.

Asimismo, debido al grado de descomposición que presentaba el organismo, no fue posible realizar la toma de muestras.

 

La especie de Ballena de Aleta (Balaenoptera physalus) se encuentra bajo la categoría de “Sujeta a Protección Especial (Pr)” de acuerdo a la Norma Oficial Mexicana NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 y su aprovechamiento extractivo para fines de subsistencia o comercial, se encuentra prohibido en el territorio nacional.

Es considerado como el segundo mamífero marino más grande del mundo, sólo por debajo de la Ballena Azul (Balaenoptera musculus), y llega a medir hasta los 27 de metros de largo; se le caracteriza por ser una especie denominada “Cosmopolita”, debido a que su rango de distribución es muy amplio, pudiéndose encontrar en casi todas las aguas del mundo, con excepción a las aguas contiguas a los bloques de hielo de ambos polos.
