Las palabras de la activista sueca se escucharon en momentos en que el Foro Económico Mundial se pone en guardia respecto del cambio climático. 

Este año, y por primera vez desde que se tenga registro, los riesgos ambientales se encuentran entre las cinco principales preocupaciones a largo plazo del grupo, mientras que los ejecutivos empresariales afirman que están cada vez más preocupados por los temas ambientales. Pero los jóvenes activistas en Davos señalaron que nada de esto es suficiente.

Thunberg está dando relevancia a la cumbre en Davos, que durante años ha sido blanco de críticas por ser considerada, en gran medida, un patio de juegos para multimillonarios donde los ricos debaten entre ellos sin escuchar voces externas. 

Este día, la sala estaba llena en este primer panel de las 8:30 horas locales con jóvenes activistas, algo relativamente inusual para un evento sobre cambio climático en Davos.

Las empresas que han asistido al evento durante las últimas cinco décadas tienen una gran responsabilidad por la crisis climática actual, señalan los activistas.

Thunberg instó a las compañías, los gobiernos y los medios a escuchar a los científicos. Mencionó una investigación de 2018 del Grupo Intergubernamental de Expertos sobre el Cambio Climático (IPCC, por sus siglas en inglés) que concluyó que el presupuesto de carbono -la cantidad que se puede liberar para seguir manteniendo limitado el calentamiento global en un nivel específico- es de 340 gigatoneladas de dióxido de carbono y que, con los actuales niveles de emisión, desaparecerá en menos de ocho años.
