Será entonces una revolución de innovación y compromiso. 

El reciclaje. Esa palabra que hemos escuchado desde hace años, pero que en la práctica no termina por convertirse en una acción tan común como quisiéramos.

Y en realidad con sólo separar correctamente la basura en casa ya vamos ganando la batalla en contra de la contaminación por plásticos.

“Las pequeñas acciones de cada uno de los casi 130 millones de personas que viven en este país son el punto nodal que puede cambiar la situación (…) Si todos evitamos tirar basura en la calle y la depositamos de manera adecuada en un bote en casa o en la calle, esto va a generar una cultura y se irá esparciendo en todo el país. Y así vamos a tener ciudades limpias, vamos a tener un país mucho más atractivo, vamos a tener nuestras playas limpias, nuestros centros turísticos limpios. Es parte de ir construyendo esta cultura juntos”, dijo en entrevista Jesús Lucatero, subdirector de Sustentabilidad Corporativa de Coca-Cola México.

De hecho, en materia de reciclaje de botellas PET, México es uno de los líderes a nivel global. Actualmente se recuperan 6 de cada 10, según datos de la asociación Ecología y Compromiso Empresarial (Ecoce).

En otros países se recuperan menos envases, por ejemplo, en Estados Unidos tres de cada 10, y en Canadá y Brasil cuatro de cada 10.

Sin embargo, no se puede cantar victoria, pues aún hay 4 botellas que no se recuperan. ¿Cómo lograrlo? Si bien hoy en día las empresas y los gobiernos están más comprometidos con el reciclaje, el gran salto se puede dar desde nuestras casas.

Con darle el tratamiento correcto a esas botellas se ayuda mucho. Básicamente es aplastarla, no quitarle la tapa, ni la etiqueta (también se reciclan), y depositarle en el lugar correcto para que se acopie y recicle.

“Es una cosa muy sencilla. Todos tiramos la basura en el bote en nuestras casas. Pero si tenemos un bote separado y en la separación más básica, que es orgánico e inorgánico, si yo compacto este envase, lo cierro bien, eso le va a facilitar el trabajo a las personas que después van a hacer una separación de los residuos (…) Esas pequeñas acciones que parecieran en un primer acercamiento poco significativas, que no ayudan a nadie, la verdad es que a lo largo de la cadena van sumando”, dijo Lucatero, quien forma parte de la Industria Mexicana de Coca-Cola (IMCC).

La IMCC se ha se planteado la meta de recuperar y reciclar el 100 por ciento de sus envases vendidos para 2030, que los envases incluyan cuando mínimo 50 por ciento de materiales reciclados para ese mismo año.

Actualmente todas sus botellas azules de Ciel, Sprite y la verde de Fresca, están hechas con 100% de material reciclado.

De hecho, la firma es líder en cuanto al reciclaje del PET grado alimenticio en México, y para su labor cuenta con PetStar, la planta de reciclaje más grande del mundo, e IMER, la primera planta de reciclaje construida en Latinoamérica. 

En conjunto pueden procesar más de 85 mil toneladas al año de este material, lo que equivale a llenar 3 veces el Estadio Azteca.

Para poner en relieve la importancia del reciclaje, el reutilizar por ejemplo una 1 tonelada de PET o vidrio equivale a evitar el uso de 222 barriles de petróleo o a la iluminación de 37 mil 508 casas con focos de 60 watts durante 4 horas.

También al ahorro de 650 duchas de 10 minutos, o significa el haber plantado 355 árboles, según datos de Ecoce.

Retornables, otro ‘aliado’

En la cultura mexicana, los envases retornables están arraigados. Ir a la tienda de ‘la esquina’ con nuestra botella vacía, entregarla a cambio de un ahorro en el precio del líquido que queremos consumir es una actividad muy común.

Tan común que quizá no percibimos la importancia de esta acción, pues le damos a los envases una nueva vida circular que colabora con el medio ambiente.

“En el caso de los envases retornables el beneficio es claro. Cada envase retornable de plástico puede dar 25 vueltas por que llega a tu casa, va al mercado, luego regresa con nosotros, la volvemos a llenar”, explicó el ejecutivo de la IMCC.

“El vidrio puede dar hasta 70 vueltas. Con la utilización de esos envases reducimos la generación de nuevos plásticos”, añadió.

Lucatero indicó que además tienen la meta de que en 2025 la mitad del portafolio de bebidas de la compañía se componga por envases retornables y no únicamente las presentaciones familiares, como en la actualidad, además de que para ese mismo año el 100% de sus envases sean reciclables.

Estas acciones forman parte de la llamada economía circular, en la que los productos se diseñen y optimicen para ser reutilizados y reciclados. 

De acuerdo con el Banco Mundial, la incorporación de formas inteligentes y sostenibles de gestionar los desechos ayudará a promover el crecimiento económico eficiente y minimizar el impacto ambiental.

“La gestión adecuada de los desechos tiene sentido desde el punto de vista económico”, manifestó Silpa Kaza, especialista en desarrollo urbano del Banco Mundial y autora principal del informe ‘Los desechos 2.0: Un panorama mundial de la gestión de desechos sólidos hasta 2050’´de la institución.

“Los desechos no recogidos y mal eliminados tienen un impacto significativo en la salud pública. El costo de abordar ese impacto es mucho más elevado que el de elaborar y hacer funcionar sistemas sencillos y adecuados de gestión de desechos. Las soluciones existen y nosotros podemos ayudar a los países a encontrarlas”, agrega.

En este sentido, Lucatero explica lo que significa esa economía circular aterrizada en el consumo que tenemos día a día.

“La economía circular se traduce en que un envase que tenga múltiples vidas es la manera más fácil que he encontrado esta conexión, es decir, de esta botella que consumimos hoy, como es nuestra botella de Ciel, si hacemos una disposición final adecuada lograremos que mañana pueda ser una de Sprite o una de Fresca, entonces tiene múltiples vidas y ese es el ciclo perfecto, que no generamos mayor impacto al planeta, al no producir nuevas botellas”.

Según el Banco Mundial, si no se adoptan medidas urgentes, para 2050 los desechos a nivel mundial crecerán un 70 por ciento respecto a los niveles actuales.
