Futures: Dow down 0.1%, S&P 500 and Nasdaq down 0.2% each

Dec 2 (Reuters) – U.S. stock index futures started December lower after recording
robust gains last month, with focus on a slate of economic data later this week, including a jobs report,
to gauge the Federal Reserve’s interest rate path.

This week’s centerpiece would be the November nonfarm payrolls report due on Friday, a key metric in also gauging the state
of the labor market.

Traders currently see a more than 61% chance of the Fed opting for a 25-basis-point rate
cut when it meets later this month, compared to a near 83%
chance seen a month prior, as per CME’s FedWatch Tool.

An October jobs opening reading is slated to be released on Tuesday, while November private payrolls data is due on Wednesday.

The S&P 500 and the blue-chip Dow clocked record closing highs on Friday, capping off
a stellar November for U.S. equities.

Investors relished in U.S. stocks last month after Republican candidate Donald Trump recaptured the White House along
with his party sweeping both houses of Congress.

Trump’s policies on tax cuts, tariffs and deregulation could spur greater corporate performance.

However, concerns that his policies could bump up inflation have also led to markets dialing back
hopes of the Fed ramping up its rate easing cycle.

The week is also packed with data that could indicate how the economy
is faring, including multiple surveys of economic activity for the last month.

November manufacturing activity surveys from S&P Global and the Institute for Supply
Management (ISM) are due later in the day.

A slate of Fed speakers will also make public appearances this week including Fed Chair Jerome Powell, with investors hunting for any clues on the central bank’s policy path.

Comments from Fed Governor Christopher Waller and New York Fed President John Williams would be on the radar later
in the day.

On the day, most megacap and growth stocks were slightly lower, with Nvidia’s 1.6% fall leading losses.
Tesla , on the other hand, outperformed with a 1.7% advance.

At 5:06 a.m. ET, Dow E-minis were down 54 points, or 0.12%,
S&P 500 E-minis were down 12.75 points, or 0.21%, and
Nasdaq 100 E-minis were down 48.5 points, or 0.23%.

Among other early premarket movers, Gap rose 3.5% after J.P.
Morgan upgraded the apparel retailer’s rating to «overweight» from «neutral».

All six senior members of the new federal anti-corruption watchdog have accepted Qantas Chairman’s Lounge memberships as calls grow
to refer Anthony Albanese over the perks he took from the airline. 

Gift disclosure logs for the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) leadership positions show commissioners are all part of Australia’s ‘most exclusive club’ the Chairman’s Lounge membership extended by invite only by the
Qantas chair.

This has raised concerns over how impartial the body would
be when dealing with Qantas matters. 

If Mr Albanese has requested flight upgrades from former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce
directly, as reported in a new book, he may have fallen foul of
the strict Ministerial Code of Conduct which prohibits ministers from seeking
‘any kind of benefit’ 

Commissioner Paul Brereton declared Chairman’s Lounge membership in 2023,
as did the CEO Philip Reed and deputy commissioners Jaala Hinchcliffe and Nicole Rose, Sky News reported on Wednesday. 

Deputy commissioners Ben Gauntlett and Kylie Kilgour declared their membership in February 2024, which means it was after the NACC
began operation in July 2023.

An NACC spokesperson confirmed the Commissioner, three deputy commissioners and CEO are members of
the Chairman’s lounge.

‘This does not impact the integrity of the Commission,’
the spokesman said.

‘Each of the statutory office holders has made appropriate declarations in regards to Chairman’s lounge
membership in the NACC Gifts and Benefits register.

‘Qantas is not a Commonwealth agency within the Commission’s jurisdiction.’

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and his deputy Sussan Ley have said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the
NACC over 22 upgrades and extra Chairman’s Lounge memberships
received from Qantas. 

An insight into the type of service offered by the Chairman’s Lounges was
offered by a job ad posted on employment site Indeed for the one at Canberra Airport.

The ad, placed by hotel group Accor that Qantas contracts to run the lounges, stated they
were seeking ‘a highly motivated Food & Beverage Attendant to join our experienced and
professional Front of House team’.

‘This role is based within the Chairman’s Lounge, a small fine dining restaurant and lounge area that offers an a la carte menu designed by Neil Perry Consulting,’ the ad states. 

‘Service is discrete yet attentive, providing friendly and
efficient food and beverage offerings that meets our passengers’ expectations.’

out the requirements to serve the high and mighty

Applicants must ‘have experience working in a fine dining environment and the ability to work a
seven- day rotating roster.

The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy when booking Qantas flight by personally requesting them from Mr Joyce are made in a new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist
Joe Aston. 

Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs, which included Minister for Transport to ask for special upgrades that only the CEO could dole out for himself or his family.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.

The book also revealed that as well as son Nathan having
a ‘plus one’ Chairman’s Lounge membership Mr Albanese’s partner Jodie Haydon did as well. 

Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that all were ‘declared in the
appropriate way’.

SHANGHAI, Oct 9 (Reuters) – China’s yuan held steady against the U.S.

dollar on Wednesday, as investors awaited more stimulus from the world’s second-largest economy and the Federal Reserve’s
September meeting minutes due later in the day to gauge its policy path.
The dollar held steady, giving some relief to the yuan after a sharp rally to a seven-week high last week.

Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was last trading 12
pips lower than the previous late session close at 7.066.
Prior to the market opening, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) set the midpoint rate, around which the
yuan is allowed to trade in a 2% band, at 7.0568 per dollar, only 3 pips
weaker than a Reuters’ estimate.

China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the first time since Sept.
13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after officials
on Tuesday failed to offer much new on stimulus plans to
revive the economy. The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar
so far this month, due to broad dollar strength, but the currency has
0.5% firmed for the year-to-date.

China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for an upside surprise
from expected fiscal stimulus news, said UBS strategists led by Rohit Arora, adding that the offshore yuan’s near-term risk reward is unattractive.
«Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,» the strategists said.

Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting additional stimulus measures that could help further lift China asset sentiment.
Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade well if
local equities remain supported, similar to what happened in Nov.

2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the bank’s note to clients.
The offshore yuan traded at 7.0682 yuan per dollar, up about 0.09%
in Asian trade. The dollar’s six-currency index was 0.039% higher at 102.53.

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the views of everyday Australians, unlike the
two-party-dominated system in the United States. 

The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe
Rogan  complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped
in the two-party system’.

‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening in Australia at the
moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe countered.

‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to bring a non-party-line
series of points to the argument.

‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us.
In that it’s making both of the main parties re-examine who
they are and what they stand for.

Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US
politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.

There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian,
and Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.

Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get on the ballot in dozens
of states as an independent candidate before he pulled out
and backed Republican Donald Trump. 

He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet. 

Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.

The former New York property developer had even considered running for
president in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement – formed by former third-party presidential candidate Ross
Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992
but gained no electoral college votes.

Perot was the most popular minority party candidate
since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying
six states including California and coming second ahead of Republican William Taft.

Australia has seen a rise in recent years of
nominally independent politicians who have taken votes away from the two traditional parties
of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition

This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have 12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate

This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views on climate with the traditional ‘blue’ approach of the centre-right Liberal
Party on economics.

Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister
Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.

In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the
2022 election. 

She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 16,
with this tally including the four Greens, three conservative independents
and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.

Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired
in August, has recently resurfaced in teal social media adverts.

They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court, who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding to some teal candidates.

Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals, however.

Sanders meanwhile opted for a black lace number which showed off her toned figure.

Five years have passed since the triumphant opening of Joker at
the Venice Film Festival. I still vividly remember reeling out of a
morning screening, dazzled less by the unforgiving glare of the Venetian sun than by the movie we’d
just been shown.

dazzled less by the unforgiving glare of the Venetian sun than by the movie we’d just been shown.

Last night, here in Venice, came the world premiere of the sequel, Joker: Folie a Deux The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix
once more in the title role, this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I suppose we must call the love interest, although that would undervalue
her wonderful performance.

The film is audaciously different in style from the original,
not quite as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all the
same. 

It begins with a kind of sinister jauntiness with a Joker animation in the style of a Tom & Jerry cartoon,
to show that since the events of the first movie, Arthur Fleck along with his murderous alter
ego has become a cultural phenomenon in Gotham City. There has even been a TV movie about
him.

Joaquin Phoenix is once more in the title role, this time joined
by Lady Gaga as what I suppose we must call the love interest, although that
would undervalue her wonderful performance

Joker: Folie a Deux is released on October 4, 2024 and will
premiere at the 81st annual Venice Film Festival

But Arthur is behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be judged sane enough to stand
trial for murder, and in the meantime enjoying his
celebrity status both with fellow prisoners and even the warders,
one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson,
feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Lady Gaga plays Lee, a fellow inmate on her way, we suppose, to becoming Joker’s girlfriend Harley
Quinn. The pair hit it off at a music therapy class,
and are soon mutually smitten, but Lee makes it clear that she loves
the dangerously charismatic Joker, ‘clown prince of crime’,
not the gloomily introspective Arthur. 

Indeed, identity confusion is the theme of this film, which delves even deeper than the original into
schizophrenia and other types of mental illness.

It’s been said that Folie a Deux is a musical. It’s not, but music
looms large as an expression of Arthur and Lee’s burgeoning love for one another.

It is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953 classic The Band Wagon that Lee,
who claims to have been imprisoned for arson, sets fire to their prison wing.

The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to escape,
yet Phillips and his co-writer Scott Silver toy with our expectations
throughout; each time we anticipate which way the narrative is going to go, it confounds us by wheeling off
in another direction. 

The music is a constant, though, with Lady Gaga giving her interpretation of lovely
old Burt Bacharach and even Motown numbers, and Phoenix more
than holding his own. There are also a couple of swooning dance routines that
make Arthur and Lee look like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling and
Emma Stone in La La Land.

Eventually, after Arthur’s high-profile TV appearance with a smug interviewer played by
Steve Coogan, it is time for the trial, with all of Gotham gripped by the subject of multiple personality disorder. 

Is Arthur the defendant accused of five murders, or is it Joker?
His kindly lawyer (Catherine Keener) wants to make clear it is Arthur; Lee just as
urgently wants him to identify as Joker.

For those cinema-goers who consider Joker: Folie a
Deux to be just another unnecessary Batman spin-off,
you should maybe think again 

All this is compellingly directed by Phillips, and superbly acted
by Phoenix especially, in a role for which he seems custom-made, but by Gaga too.

We’ve known since A Star is Born in 2018 that she can act, but she really is terrific in a bad-girl role.
They’d have loved her at St Trinians. 

As for those cinema-goers who consider Joker:
Folie a Deux to be just another unnecessary Batman spin-off,
you should maybe think again. 

This might not quite be in the top rank of films about mental illness, alongside all-time
greats such as Psycho and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
But it’s not too far off.

Set for release on October 4, the second instalment finds Arthur
Fleck institutionalised at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker.

Lady Gaga began to walk away and looked over shoulder to take one last look at the artwork, and revealed Harley Quinn makeup on her face.

She tossed her arms up into the air as she danced her way out of the abandoned Louvre Museum as the
reel came to an end.

In conclusion, text on the screen revealed that an exhibition at the Louvre called Figures of the Fool will begin next month on October 16.

According to the official website, the museum is ‘dedicating an unprecedented exhibition to the myriad figures of the fool, which permeated the pictorial
landscape of the 13th to the 16th centuries.’

In the caption of the post, the performer wrote to her followers, ‘There’s
always a Joker. #FiguresDuFou #Louvre #JokerMovie.’

But with Christmas all about sharing, toasting, and big get-togethers,

Consumer group Which? has named Tesco Finest Premier Cru Brut Champagne the best Christmas fizz, outclassing
Moët & Chandon’s Brut Impérial. The supermarket fizz costs just £25 a
bottle, but many popular Champagnes are priced over £40.

With that in mind, I’m sharing my secrets for sparkling swaps that keep
both the palate and the wallet happy.

Saving: £42.05 a bottle 

For Bolly bling without the sting, head to the Loire Valley, where
the Bollinger family crafts this Crémant using the same traditional method as their Champagnes.
Made primarily from Chenin Blanc, which thrives in the Loire, it undergoes
24 months of aging, delivering a Crémant with depth that offers a charming
twist on Bollinger’s rich Champagne style – with change to spare.

Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne, £280

Saving: £248 a bottle 

Renowned producer Louis Roederer is the name behind the iconic Cristal Champagne – a prized choice among celebrities, especially when served in a flashy jeroboam, complete with
sparklers in the ‘VIP section’ of nightclubs.
But if the £270 price tag brings tears to your eyes,
try Cristal’s Californian cousin, Quartet. Crafted in the cool Anderson Valley, it offers a taste of luxury for almost a tenth of
the cost.

Swap for? Morrisons The Best Crémant De Limoux Rosé NV, £12.50

Saving: £67.50 a bottle 

If you’re after something pink, grab this super chic Crémant de
Limoux from Morrisons – delivering luxe for less.
With a delicate effervescence and notes of strawberries and cream, it hints at pink Champagne at
five times the price. And here’s a little-known fact: legend has it that the art of fizz was first discovered in Limoux, in the South of
France – though our friends in Champagne may disagree.

Swap for? Segura Viudas Brut Vintage Premium Cava, £12

Saving:  £303 a bottle

For showstopping-style on a shoestring, skip Harrods, forget Jay-Z’s red-carpet-ready ‘Ace
of Spades’ and head to Sainsbury’s for Segura Viudas premium cava, complete
with a shield that’s delightfully close to a spade.

For the price of one bottle of that Champagne, you could bag 26 bottles of
this classy cava – and, honestly, after a few glasses, who’s noticing the difference?

Ruinart Blanc de Blancs Champagne, £89

Swap for? Fortnum’s Franca Contea Franciacorta Brut NV, £26.50

Saving: £62.50 a bottle

‘Blanc de Blancs’ meaning ‘white of whites’ is the name for
bubbles made solely from white grapes – typically Chardonnay in Champagne, delivering elegance and finesse,
à la Ruinart. Prices have crept up as Blanc de Blancs become all the rage, but hop over the border to the
hidden gem of Franciacorta in Lombardy, northern Italy, and you’ll
find complex, vinous sips with plenty of flair, like this Fortnum’s pick.

Pol Roger Champagne, £55

Swap for? Graham Beck Selection Sparkling Wine, £13.50

Saving:  £41.50 a bottle

I served these delicious South African bubbles at my wedding – quaffed
in record time, with nobody realising it wasn’t Champagne. As
well as my own big day, Graham Beck has made an appearance
at state events for Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama, earning it
the title of ‘presidential pick’ for sparkling wine. And
you’ll save a few quid compared to other politician favourites, like Pol Roger.

of top Brit sip, Sauvignon Blanc, comes a fresh take on fizz.
